James Hugh Calum Laurie nació el 11 de junio de 1959 en Oxford, Inglaterra, el menor de cuatro hermanos (dos chicas y otro chico).

Hijo de Patricia y William,un medallista de oro olímpico en remo (1948), Hugh perteneció al equipo de remo de Cambridge, participando en la competición tradicional entre esta universidad y Oxford en 1980, en que perdieron.

Estudió arqueología y antropología en Cambridge.

En el primer año de universidad conoció a Emma Thompson, que le presentó al que sería su compañero humorístico Stephen Fry.

En el último año de universidad fue presidente del “Footlights Club” (impulsor de comediantes británicos) mientras Thompson era vicepresidenta.

Laurie, Fry y Thompson se parodiaron en la serie de TV “The Young Ones”

Esatá casado desde 1989 con Jo Green y tienen tres hijos: Rebecca (que debutó como actriz en "Wit" 2001, interpretando a Emma Thompson de niña), Bill y Charlie.

Es aficionado a las motos desde que su padre le regaló la primera a los 16 años.

Toca el piano, la guitarra y canta.

Ha publicado la novela "The Gun Seller", un thriller humorístico, que en España se titula "Una Noche de Perros" y la ha publicado Editorial Planeta. Acaba de escribir la segunda, "The Paper Soldier".

Mientras en el cine no ha tenido grandes éxitos, siendo su película más conocida "Stuart Little", es muy conocido en la TV británica por series como "Blackadder" o "Jeeves y Wooster" y ahora mundialmente gracias al éxito de "House M.D.", que le reportó recientemente el Globo de Oro al mejor actor en una serie dramática.
