Argumento:
El guardaespaldas Frank Farmer es llamado para encargarse de la protección de la actriz y cantante Rachel Marron, que ha recibido cartas amenazadoras.


Comentario:

Película de corte clásico que, con excelente pulso narrativo, relata la historia de un desencantado ex agente del gobierno convertido en guardaespaldas que se enamora de la mujer a la que ha de proteger, con el consiguiente dilema moral que se le plantea.

“El guardaespaldas” es un híbrido entre film musical y cine policiaco, que mezcla ambos géneros con soltura y precisión. Las canciones (algunas de las mejores de Whitney Houston) sirven, en los momentos justos, para expresar los sentimientos y pensamientos de los dos protagonistas, con lo cual aportan información interesante a la trama.


Frank Farmer es un hombre íntegro, profesional y de vuelta de todo que se encuentra con una mujer perdida en un mundo de frivolidad y que se siente sola dentro del tumulto. El enfrentamiento entre ambos no tarda en llegar.

Rachel Marron es una mujer que no acepta la situación en la que se encuentra, ya que coarta su libertad de movimientos, y desafía la férrea disciplina que su guardaespaldas quiere imponerle. Como consecuencia, lo que empieza con discusiones acaba en encuentro romántico.



Al involucrarse emocionalmente con una clienta, Frank rompe sus propias reglas, y decide no continuar con la relación. Rachel no se lo toma bien y la relación se vuelve aún más tensa. Ella es indisciplinada y el estoicismo de él la pone nerviosa.

A partir de ese momento, la película se centra más en la parte policiaca que en la romántica, y se van desentrañando poco a poco los puntos oscuros.

Sin embargo, vale la pena resaltar lo inusual de la relación amorosa interracial que se desarrolla durante el film, muy pocas veces vista en el cine americano.



El atractivo Kevin Costner, en el momento álgido de su carrera, utiliza la contención expresiva como su principal recurso para retratar al guardaespaldas. Frank es un ex agente que no estaba allí el día que dispararon a Reagan, y eso le ha marcado. Es un hombre que no tiene raíces en ningún sitio y que acaba más solo de lo que empezó.

Whitney Houston suelta algunas frases premonitorias del tipo: “Ningún puto chiflado va a apartarme del escenario”, antes de desaparecer del mundo del espectáculo gracias a… Su Rachel es una mujer decidida e independiente que no admite interferencias en su vida.



Interesante escena del guardaespaldas comiéndose tranquilamente un melocotón al tiempo que da una paliza a otro tipo. Ni pestañea. En el más puro estilo del cine negro. “No quiero volver a hablar de esto”, concluye, ¡cuando los dos hombres no han cruzado ni una palabra!

Aunque aporta al avance de la trama, me sobra algo de metraje en la escena de la casa en las montañas, refugio y reencuentro familiar, quizá por el cambio de ambiente que distrae un tanto de la historia principal.



Espectacular la escena de los Oscars, donde se puede asistir al backstage de la ceremonia a través de los ojos del protagonista, y que construye la tensión poco a poco hasta llegar a un desenlace dramático a través de un ritmo inquebrantable.
