Jack, Adam y la pastilla de retcon
2x05 Adam
Adam, que aparece brevemente en los títulos de crédito (como ya ocurriera en un capítulo de Buffy Cazavampiros), es un extraterrestre que vive de eliminar los recuerdos de las personas y sustituirlos por otros propiciando situaciones y comportamientos que no son habituales en los protagonistas.
Esto afecta sobre todo a sus vidas personales y las relaciones que mantienen entre sí:
Tras conocer a Adam (Bryan Dick) Gwen olvida a Rhys y lo que siente por él, e intentan recuperarlo con anécdotas de su romance.
Toshiko cambia de personalidad y se muestra segura de sí misma y de su relación con Adam al tiempo que rechaza a un Owen de pronto tímido, romántico y enamorado de ella.
Toshiko enamorada de Adam:
Adam: A year ago. Gwen: I love you.
Toshiko: First kiss.
Adam: You remembered?
Desprecia a Owen:
Toshiko: What?
Owen: Oh yeah, there we are, I've said it. I love you! Yes, I always have, actually. Ever since we started working together, and in fact, um, actually, I ache for you. I mean, physically, when you're in the room I just want to reach out and touch you.
Toshiko: Owen.
Owen : No, no, no, I can't keep the secret anymore. My mum said to me "seize the day", so I am seizing it and, you know I've got so much love to give you Tosh, and you know, you won't know that unless I tell you so here I am, telling you that I love you!
Adam consuela a Jack:
Jack: I let go of his hand. It was the worst day of my life. That's the last thing I'd want to remember.
Ianto descubre que Adam es el único del equipo que no aparece mencionado en su diario y éste le hace creer que es un asesino en serie. Ianto acude a Jack y le pide que le encierre para no continuar matando, él no le cree capaz de hacerlo pese a que todo parece probarlo, investiga las grabaciones de los últimos días y averigua lo que está pasando.
Por cierto, es en Adam donde sus fans creen que se ha eliminado un beso cuyo rodaje relata John Barrowman (Jack) en sus memorias a modo de anécdota en el capítulo dedicado a Torchwood. Al parecer dejaron que él y Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto) se besaran hasta que se dieron cuenta de que pasaba algo. La escena no aparece en la serie ni en los extras del DVD.
Ianto habla con Adam:
Adam: Cross me and I will fill you full of fake memories until your head is on fire because that's how I exist.
Ianto: Gwen? What did you do to her?
Adam: Memories are a very delicate thing. Feeding myself in, wiped other memories out. It's a side affect of what I have to do in order to survive.
Ianto: Jack has to know.
Adam: Remember this! I know you didn't mean to kill her you just couldn't stop yourself. Remember this!
Ianto: I didn't do that.
Adam: Oh yes you did, and she wasn't the first. Good old Ianto, loyal Ianto roaming the streets at night for bait.
Ianto: My diary.
Adam: All human record is a lie. You twist it into what you want to believe, but we know the rot in your heart. You crave flesh.
Ianto: No! Please!
Jack debe hacer que todos olviden lo sucedido durante la estancia de Adam, aunque para lograrlo renuncia a los recuerdos de su familia:
El diario de Ianto:
Ianto: Yeah, I've been looking for that.
Jack: And for the record, measuring tapes never lie.
2x06 Reset
A su llegada a Torchwood Martha, que tras salvar el mundo al final de la tercera temporada de Doctor Who trabaja como médica para la Unit comparte algunos recuerdos con Jack y comienza a relacionarse con el resto del equipo.
Jack presenta a Martha:
Jack: Suddenly, in an underground mortuary on a wet night in Cardiff, I hear the song of a Nightingale. Miss Martha Jones.
Bromea con ella sobre su visita:
Martha: Still struggling to conquer your shyness, Jack?
Dice a Owen hasta qué punto confía en ella:
Jack: I'd rely on her if the world was ending. In fact I did.
Aunque los demás no recuerdan que Martha salvó el mundo mientras el Doctor (David Tennant) y Jack eran prisioneros del Master (John Simm).
Gwen: So you know Jack pretty well then.
Martha: Oh, we were in together for a few days, but it was pretty intense.
Gwen: You mean?
Martha: Oh! God, no! No! Not that sort of intense! Nothing like that. Why? Are you and him?
Gwen: No! No! Not at all!
Martha: We must be the only two people on the planet!
Gwen: I know, what are we doing wrong?
Martha: What's his dabbling like?
Ianto: Innovative.
Martha: Yeah?
Ianto: Bordering on the avant-garde.
Y todo eso mientras resuelven el caso cuyo final enlaza con los dos siguientes capítulos, centrados en lo que le ha sucedido a Owen y las consecuencias que tiene el intento de Jack de cambiarlo.
